USPS Agreements
Southside Matt has an opportunity for you to provide us assistance in gathering information regarding USPS agreements with other law enforcement agencies. The details are included below.
Campaign Name: USPS Agreements
Please include this in the subject line of your information submission email
Description/Purpose: Southside Matt is working on an article or blog post, or series of articles or blog posts discussing the Rules & Regulations of Conduct on Postal Property. Part of this will be discussion about law enforcement jurisdiction regarding incidents that occur on Postal Property and the application of Federal Law. As a FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) request to the USPS for a list of agreements has been denied, and as Southside Matt does not have the funds to fight this denial in court, we are seeking to compile a list on our own.
Information needed:
- Category - City, County, State, Private
- Agency Name
- Contact
- Email/Phone Number/Address
- Agreement - Yes or No
Suggested steps:
- Research your state's Open Records law(s)
- Follow the procedure to request Open Records from your local police department, sheriff's department/office, and state police
- Request a listing of "any and all currently-active agreements between (city/county/state)/(department name) and the United States Postal Service (USPS) or associated entities allowing (department) to conduct law enforcement activities on Postal Property."
- Set a reminder for yourself to check up on the request after any legally-mandated or -suggested time period (e.g., Texas law provides 10 business days for an agency to respond with either the requested information, an advisory on when the information will be available, or a notice that the request has been forwarded to the Attorney General for review, so a reminder would be set for 10 business days after the request is submitted)
- Send the information to Southside Matt
